Childhood Vaccinations
Naturally, it is very important to immunise your baby and children against serious (and sometimes life threatening) diseases. So, the New Zealand Childhood Vaccination Schedule sets out a timetable of all the vaccines. These can keep your child safe from serious illness and complications. All these vaccines are free of charge.
Why are Childhood Vaccinations Important ?
Immunisation helps to prevent the spread of serious diseases. This is because a vaccine’s purpose is to teach your body to recognise and fight off disease-causing germs, thus preventing illness. In the past, many children died or had lifelong complications from diseases like Polio, Measles, Whooping Cough, Covid-19 and Diphtheria.
It is not compulsory to immunise your babies and children in New Zealand. However, vaccinations are the best way to protect your whānau from a serious illness.
Moreover, having your child vaccinated on time also protects others in our community who are more at risk. This includes very small babies and those of us who cannot be vaccinated. Vaccines in NZ are rigorously tested and are safe. Additionally, your baby is much more at risk from getting a preventable illness than from having a vaccination, so it’s less likely they might be hospitalized.
The NZ Childhood Vaccination Schedule for children is outlined below
- Immunisation starts at 6 weeks, 3 months, 5 months, one year, 15 months and 4 years. We support the Wellchild Programme.
- The full Vaccination Schedule for Children includes: pneumococcal disease, rotavirus, chickenpox, measles, mumps, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, polio, hepatitis B and Haemophilus influenza type b.
- Also, the Covid-19 vaccine has been approved in NZ for kids over 5 years.
- Childhood Vaccinations on this schedule are free for all children in our community.
- If you are Pregnant we also offer influenza and tetanus/pertussis immunisations and Covid-19. These can protect your unborn child.
- Remember to bring your Well Child Tamariki Ora book as we record your child’s vaccinations noted in this.
Try these tips for when you bring your child for Vaccination
- Before you come, consider bringing a support person, as well as something to distract your baby. Try a special toy, blanket or book.
- Breastfeeding can comfort your baby and reduce their discomfort during and after immunisation. We’ll ensure your privacy. Bring any food or drink for your little one, because a 20 minute wait is needed following vaccinations to check they have no reaction. These are uncommon but a short wait is sensible.
- Try cuddling, singing or talking to your baby to reassure them. Showing them you’re relaxed helps. That’s because when you are upset and crying it is harder for your child to stay calm.
- Meanwhile, if you have any questions or are worried about anything, talk with our friendly experienced nurses. They understand and are happy to help.
