Osteoporosis IV Infusion Treatment
Osteoporosis causes our bones to lose strength and become weaker and thinner. This weakness results in bones breaking more easily. As treatment of Osteoporosis at our IV Infusion Centre, your doctor may prescribe an annual IV Infusion treatment. Zoledronic Acid helps increase bone density, strengthens your bones and reduces the risk of fractures.
IV infusions for Osteoporosis Treatment at our centre
Osteoporosis is a disease of the bones which leads to them becoming thin and fragile. Subsequently, this results in bones breaking more easily. Sometimes this can occur even if you only have a minor injury, or while doing everyday activities.
Osteoporosis can occur at any age, but is very common in older adults, affecting over 50% of women and around 30% of men aged over 60 in NZ. Osteoporosis can be inherited, so it’s good to be aware if it runs in your family.
Fortunately, you can control some of the risk factors associated with osteoporosis. Being mindful of a good diet, not smoking, minimising alcohol, having adequate calcium and Vitamin D and doing regular weight-bearing exercise all help. Check out our physio-led classes for Osteoporosis.
Treatment options include medication that will start to protect and strengthen your bones and reduce the risk of fractures.
One treatment option for this condition is to get an Intravenous Infusion of Zoledronic Acid. Our clinical team can prescribe you an IV Infusion for Osteoporosis treatment if necessary.
What happens when you have an IV Infusion for Osteoporosis treatment?
- If you require IV therapy, our centre staff will administer a Zoledronic Acid infusion. Quite simply, a drip is inserted into your vein. The infusion takes around 15 to 30 minutes.
- Usually, Osteoporosis medication given by IV Infusion is prescribed annually.
- You will also have blood tests to monitor your calcium levels.
- To get good results from the IV Infusion of Zoledronic Acid, you should follow your doctor’s recommendations on diet and exercise for this long term condition.
Ongoing, our team are here to support you with this long term condition.
Do you need a check for Osteoporosis ?
Osteoporosis is sometimes called a “silent disease”, as bone loss happens without any outward signs. However, you might benefit from a talk with your doctor about the possibility of Osteoporosis if you have any of the following risk factors:
- Fractured (broken) your hip, wrist or spine at some point.
- Other members of your family have had Osteoporosis.
- Broken a bone since you turned 50.
- Had a fracture caused by a minor bump or fall.
- Noticed you’ve become shorter.
